Middle School Announcements

Summer Break!
June 2017:  We just ended another great school year and students are now enjoying summer break.  I encouraged our students to find productive things to do over the summer--read books, do chores, get outside for physical activity, learn new skills, spend time with family, etc.  I look forward to spending time with my family, working on some home repair projects, reading, and relaxing.

Due to staff reductions, our class schedule has undergone some significant changes so we can 'share' some teachers among the three Waterloo schools.  Students indicated their desired elective classes in May and will receive their class schedule at open house in late August or on the first day of school.  Our school counselor, Mrs. Shaver, has been busy during June finishing up those schedules.

Please contact the middle school office at 330-947-0033 if you have any specific questions. Office hours during the summer are 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. You can also email me directly at awalker@waterloovikings.org

Have a great summer!  Go Vikings!
-Mr. Aaron Walker, Principal

    -a fun tradition at Waterloo!

Congratulations to Essay Contest Winners
We are very pleased to be able to announce the winners of our seventh grade Jackie Robinson "Breaking Barriers" essay contest.
Every seventh graders wrote a 500-1400 word multi-paragraph essay about a struggle, obstacle, or barrier that they have faced and how they overcame the barrier using one or more of Jackie Robinson's nine values: citizenship, commitment, courage, determination, excellence, integrity, justice, persistence, and teamwork.
The students did a great job writing about the prompt from Scholastic. Mrs. Barkhurst and her husband were able to narrow it down to the best 11 entries from 92 essays. Then Mrs. Smith's mother, Mrs. Christine Luli, as an unbiased judge, chose the top three winners from the final eleven essays.
The first place essay was written by Mackenzie Webb. Second place went to Rachel Dickey. The third place winner was Isabella Carmichael. All of the winners received brand new books from Scholastic.
All of the essays have been mailed to Scholastic for the national essay contest. Good luck to all of our students in that next round!

Reminder about our Policy on Cell Phones and other Electronic Devices
I'm thankful for the access to instant communication that we enjoy in our time, but I want to ensure that we are using the technology in a productive and responsible way.
This is just a friendly reminder concerning the proper use of cell phones by students. Students may use phones and electronic devices in classrooms with the teacher's approval for academic work. Students may also use their devices at lunch for recreation, games, etc. Otherwise, devices should be turned off and stored in students lockers. Most students do a great job of following these rules!
Students also should not take pictures or video of other students without their consent. It is rude to take someone's picture without their permission! We want our students to practice proper etiquette with regard to their devices.
Finally, occasionally students will contact their parents directly if they become ill without going to the clinic or telling their teacher. This is not acceptable because the school needs to know if a student is feeling ill to ensure the students safety! The school nurse will assess a student's situation and ensure that parents/guardians are contacted as needed.
Of course, we never deny a student's request to contact a parent or guardian if they feel the need to do so. The office phone is the prefered method to contact parents.
Please review the middle school student handbook for our Electronic Devices Policy. Please call the school office if you have any questions. 330-947-0033.
        Thank you, -Mr. Walker

Fishing Club Field Trip a Great Success
Waterloo Middle School's new Fishing Club traveled to Walborn Reservoir on Tuesday to put their fishing skills to the test.  While some of the students have extensive angler experience, others were fishing for the first time.  The Fishing Club is the brainchild of seventh grade student Brandon Reed who approached school administration with the idea earlier in the school year.  With support from radio personality and former Waterloo board member Steve Jones along with Berkley Fishing Team of Ohio member Jeff Swanson, the administration was able to put together some instructional fishing demonstrations at the school in the weeks before the field trip to Walborn.  Students caught and released bluegill, perch, largemouth bass, and even a catfish.
